Over the spring of 2004, OI America board member and CNN reporter Mariana Sanchez wrote to her friends who happen to be world-class photographers:
“Dear Friends, I am writing to you to ask you for your help in promoting aid for the orphans of Haiti. You all well know the terrible conditions of life there, especially for the children. The organization, Orphans International, has a small house outside Jacmel where help is being given to children. They give help to orphans around the world. I am now trying to divert more attention to Haiti, and of course what they need – desperately – is funding. And for this, they need to promote the foundation. I have personally met the founder, Jim, a very kind-hearted man who is putting his own money into this... everyone, of course, is a volunteer. If you are in the position of donating a photograph you can reach me at home. Many, many, many thanks, Mariana.”
Prize-winning photographers that contributed to the exhibition, “Eye on Haiti”, included Gary Fabiano, Tim Fadek, Michael Kamber and Les Stone. Les’ photograph also graced our program cover. This exhibition can still be viewed on our website.
